When Zagreb Lights Up: Where the Night Is Just Getting Started

Some evenings simply are not made for staying in

They begin spontaneously, with a message saying, “Shall we meet for a drink?”, and end with a few cocktails, a dinner everyone is still talking about days later and dancing into the small hours.

That is Zagreb after dark: a city where the transition from wine bars and hidden cocktail spots to restaurants booked weeks in advance feels entirely effortless. One glass leads to another, dinner turns into one more round, and “let’s go to just one more place” almost never means just one. Whether you are in the mood for an excellent glass of wine, a signature cocktail, a memorable dinner or dancing until morning, Zagreb has an address for every stage of the night.

Witrina

The best nights out rarely begin at full volume. It is far more appealing to ease into them over a glass of wine, good music and a conversation slowly gathering momentum. Witrina is exactly that kind of place: a small, unpretentious wine bar with an excellent selection and an atmosphere that can turn a planned “one quick drink” into two without anyone noticing. It is the perfect place to slow down after work and toast the beginning of the evening.

Dinner Time — Kiyomi or Theatrium

When the inevitable question arises — “Where are we having dinner?” — the answer depends entirely on your mood.

For Japanese flavours, Kiyomi is a restaurant that has helped set the standard on Zagreb’s dining scene for years. Superb sushi, robata specialities, carefully composed plates and an elegant interior make it one of those places worth booking in advance. This is not a dinner to rush; each course deserves its moment.

For a more relaxed atmosphere and contemporary European cooking, Theatrium is an equally compelling choice. In the heart of the city, it brings together seasonal ingredients, inventive dishes and an excellent wine list in a space that encourages you to stay a little longer. It is made for long conversations, sharing plates and that moment when everyone at the table realises that nobody is ready to go home.

Yakuza

The best part about Kiyomi and Theatrium? You do not have to go far after dinner. Simply head downstairs to Yakuza, an elegant speakeasy hiding some of the city’s most creative cocktails. The intimate setting, low lighting and drinks inspired by Japanese flavours create the feeling that you have discovered a secret address known only to Zagreb’s seasoned night owls.

Peaches & Cream

As the evening gathers pace, it is time to turn up the energy. Peaches & Cream has long been one of Zagreb’s favourite cocktail destinations, equally suited to a first date, a birthday celebration or friends who only meant to stop by for one drink. Signature cocktails, excellent music and a reliably lively atmosphere are precisely why people tend to stay far longer than planned.

Mr. Fogg

If there is one bar Zagreb locals keep returning to, it is Mr. Fogg. Inspired by London drinking dens, it is known for an impressive gin selection, premium tonics and cocktails mixed by an experienced team behind the bar. Even if gin is not usually your drink, trust the bartender’s recommendation — there is a good chance you will leave with a new favourite.

Blend Bar

Once the hour is getting seriously late, Blend Bar makes an ideal stop for one final cocktail before the night moves into its next phase. A contemporary interior, subdued lighting and original drinks make it one of those places where conversations grow louder, the music rises a notch and everyone starts wondering where to go next.

Peti Kupe

Think the night ends here? Not quite. The real finale awaits at Peti Kupe, one of the most exciting venues on Zagreb’s nightlife scene. In summer, its spacious terrace is almost impossible to resist. With a cocktail in hand, a DJ gradually lifting the mood and the crowd gathering before the city slips fully into its nocturnal rhythm, it is the perfect prelude to a late night.

As midnight approaches, the energy moves naturally into the striking interior of a former railway workshop, where local and international DJs take over the dance floor. That transition from open-air terrace to club is one of the reasons Peti Kupe has become an essential Zagreb nightlife address. Nobody checks the time here, and “one more track” can very easily turn into a night that ends with the first light of morning.

Because the best nights in Zagreb are never the ones planned down to the last detail. They happen spontaneously — with good company, excellent food, an even better cocktail and a city that reveals its most entertaining side only after sunset.
