Behind the concept is Dmitrii, a young Russian and a “Zagreb local by choice” for the past decade. After traveling across Asia, he developed the idea of bringing a restaurant format to Zagreb focused exclusively on dumplings. While the city’s Asian food scene has exploded in recent years with sushi bars, ramen shops and fusion concepts, Ho Chu stands apart with its specialist vision: instead of a broad, typical Asian menu, everything here revolves around one thing – handmade dumplings beloved around the world.

The space is modern and vibrant, filled with playful details and bold red accents glowing under neon lights. The open kitchen appears almost “cut out” of a corrugated metal wall reminiscent of shipping containers. Guests can watch as everything is prepared – the dough rolled out, filled with colorful ingredients and arranged in bamboo steamers. The menu’s main stars are xiao long bao (the famous soup dumplings that “burst” in your mouth), siu mai and shrimp har gow, alongside fried gyoza and soft bao buns stuffed with meat or vegetables. Flavors range from classics like pork and chicken to more adventurous, internationally inspired combinations featuring mushrooms or truffles. Prices are very reasonable, striking a balance that makes guests feel they’re paying for quality – not just for the concept. Portions are ideal for sharing, so it’s best to order several varieties and sample everything at the table. There are also a few interesting desserts on offer, and while the drink program is simple, it’s perfectly adequate.
