Jing Yuan Tea House

Zelena magistrala 26

In Zagreb’s Gajnice neighborhood, one of the districts at the very foot of Zagreb’s mountain, at an address that is easy to miss if you do not know what you are looking for, you will find Jing Yuan Tea House, probably the only true Chinese tea house in Croatia.

It is run by Alex and Ivy Wang, a married couple who moved from China to Zagreb more than ten years ago and began building a story here around traditional Chinese tea culture and home cooking, first in a small space in the city center and today in a hidden house in quiet Gajnice. Even today, after all this time, it is still one of those places people mostly hear about through word of mouth.

The space is entirely in dark wood, calming and unobtrusive, richly but not excessively decorated with Chinese details, with an emphasis on good tea, authentic Chinese food and an atmosphere that makes it easy for people to stay here for hours. The focus is on the traditional Chinese tea ceremony, guided by Alex himself. Guests can experience a new way of enjoying tea, feel the charm of the entire ancient process and try numerous varieties of quality Chinese teas – from oolong and pu’erh to green and white teas that Jing Yuan sources directly from China.

In recent years, the place has also become increasingly known for its food, especially its hot pot dinners, homemade dumplings, hand-pulled noodles and excellent Da Pan Ji chicken platter. The food menu is small and focused, and that is precisely part of the magic of this place. Here you will always find a loyal crowd for whom this kind of real Chinese gastronomy is irreplaceable, with the feeling that you are in someone’s house in the mountains of Yunnan.
